# Three valued logic oracle

This paper surveys the ways in which different types of logic—classical two-valued, three-valued, intuitionistic, modal, autoepistemic, linear—have been used to provide declarative semantics ...
Three-valued Logic Overview. The term three-value logic refers to the fact that in the HotDocs scripting language there are three acceptable answer values for an IF instruction, or any other expression that evaluates a true/false question: TRUE, FALSE, and UNANSWERED. For example, if a template user doesn't answer a question resulting from an IF instruction during an interview, HotDocs does ...

In ternary logic, a two input truth table has 9 rows, where each row of the output can take on three values, giving 19,683 (that is, 3 to the 9th power) possible functions of 2 variables. Clearly, this is too many functions to enumerate, but as with Boolean logic, a few of these functions are worthy of naming.
"DECODE compares a column or expression to search values, returning a result when there is a match. DECODE is similar to IF_THEN-ELSE logic." Decode SQL represents one of the most powerful of all of the BIFs. Oracle decode SQL is used within the Oracle database to transform data values from one value to another.Three-valued Logic Overview. Jan Łukasiewicz (1878-1956) was a Polish logician and philosopher who introduced mathematical logic into Poland, became the earliest founder of the Warsaw school of logic, and one of the principal architects and teachers of that school. His most famous achievement was to give the first rigorous formulation of many-valued logic.

Possibly NULL logic would be far more clear if Oracle (and other engines) maintained consistent behavior regarding NULL handling in their functions."DECODE compares a column or expression to search values, returning a result when there is a match. "unknown" is not a boolean value in three valued logic. The boolean values are TRUE, FALSE, NULL. In Oracle when a column is null (i.e. holds no value) the absence of a value could have several meanings (other than "unknown"). At this point one should remember that in SQL, as well as in the relational theory, three-valued logic is used. That means the true value of a comparison operation can be not only TRUE or FALSE, but also UNKNOWN.
